Product of the Year Awards: Coles and Woolworths topped 2022 list

Thousands of Australians voted for their favorite supermarket finds and it is evident that the pandemic has had a huge influence on their top choices.

Australian shoppers voted for their favorite products and Coles, along with convenience, topped the list.

The impact of the pandemic was evidence in the annual Product of the Year price results, which found that more than one in three buyers said they would switch products if it was easier for them.

Of the 37 winners in multiple categories, 12 were easy snacks, ready-to-eat or frozen meals.

This includes Coles’ Green Goddess salad kit which won the award for best ready-to-eat fresh product and Nando’s Bag & Bake range for the kitchen category.

Another 12 winners were affordable luxury and pleasure items including mattresses, desserts and skin care products.

The data, conducted by Nielsen, found that nearly 90 percent of consumers had tried at least one new product in the past 12 months, while 47 percent had switched between different branded products while testing something new. .

Price remained the primary factor when deciding to switch to new products, but convenience followed and exceeded friends and family recommendations and availability.

It was also revealed that half of Australians believe it is important that the new products they try are sustainable.

Research also found that consumers believed Woolworths had the best shopping experience online with a third of participants voting for the large supermarket to provide them with the most convenience.

The big retailer has bet Coles, ALDI and IGA on all the factors that have been tested, but it is on par with Coles when it comes to affordability; when combined, they score in almost two-thirds of buyers’ votes for who has the best prices.

Consumers claimed Woolworths had the best fresh and healthy or organic produce, with 41% of people voting for the supermarket, while 29% voted for Coles.

Overall, Coles took home the gong for Best Product in 11 categories – including Best Coffee, Batteries, Small Commodities, Frozen Performance Meals, and Gourmet Snacks – while Woolworths took home six which include diet foods, diapers and personal care items.

The winners were selected after a rigorous testing process.

A panel of judges – made up of various industry experts – test products for quality, credibility and innovation.

Then the products they select as finalists are voted on by 5,000 Australians.

Product of the Year Director Sarah Connelly said the ongoing and unexpected restrictions have dramatically altered Australia’s spending habits.

“Now we are seeing people having to work more from home, deal with more people in their households, and in many cases even home-schooled children, leaving the average Aussie strapped for time and capacity to prepare for courses. sumptuous meal, ”she said.

“Instead, we are seeing a shift towards easy, straightforward, pre-made meals and snacks that save people time and leave one less thing to worry about in their day-to-day lives. “
