You’ve probably heard of fasting when it comes to food, but have you ever heard of fasting when it comes to your skin? A few months ago, I came across a TikTok video where a beauty influencer was talking about “skin fasting”. After taking a deep dive on the trend, I learned that “skin fasting” is about taking a break from your skincare products to give your skin time to rebalance and reset. The idea is that when we put products on our skin, we’re telling our skin what to do, and it ends up getting “lazy.” For example, by using moisturizer every day, we are letting our skin know that it doesn’t need to produce natural oils to keep our skin hydrated because we already do that step on our own using products. external.
Koko Hayashi is the founder of Mirai Clinical Body Care, the company that first popularized the idea of skin fasting. She says of the trend: “Dry skin is dry on the surface of the skin. The moisture inside the skin dehydrates because there is not enough protection. [natural oils] to keep the humidity inside. With too much artificial moisturizer added, the skin stops producing its own natural oils. This leads to even drier skin.”
There are several ways to effectively complete a quick skin, and some variations are much more intense than others. In some cases, skin fasting can be as simple as skipping skincare products once a week at night before bed. However, I chose to try the more intense version where I skipped all makeup and skincare products other than water and SPF for an entire week.
The quick skin routine would be a far cry from my current skincare routine, which consists of quite a few products. In the morning, I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, then I apply two different moisturizing serums, moisturizer, eye cream, face oil, and SPF. At night, after cleansing, I use retinol plus moisturizer, and occasionally hit my skin for extra hydration. I also use a long list of different lip products to keep my lips hydrated throughout the day and night.
On the first day of my skin fast, I woke up optimistic. The night before I used all my regular skin care products so my face was still hydrated when I woke up. I didn’t leave my house at all and avoided windows like the plague, so I skipped the SPF completely, which made me wash my face with just water at night, a sort of child’s play.
By the third day, things had taken an abrupt turn and I felt completely miserable. I needed to leave the house the night before, so I used my usual FPS before I went shopping. When it came time to wash my face at night, I didn’t feel like water alone would be enough. My skin felt like it had a coarse layer on it and I went to bed severely missing my cleanser.
On the fifth day, I woke up with such dry skin and chapped lips that I started considering all the different ways to cheat while quickly filling in my skin. If I applied lipstick to my boyfriend’s lips and kissed him, would that count? If I put moisturizer on his face and snuggled him up – just because I loved him, not because my skin was dry – that would be nice, right? I somehow managed to get through the day without cheating, even though it was very, very difficult.
By the sixth and seventh day, things had kind of started to calm down. My skin was not screaming from the dryness. In fact, the only places I really noticed excessive dryness were around my nose and on my lips. It was still a little uncomfortable, but I was able to get through the day and do my job without fantasizing about moisturizer and lipstick every couple of minutes.
In the end, a week without my beloved skincare products didn’t leave my skin feeling any better than it did when it started, but things didn’t go so badly. As to whether or not I will complete another skin quickly in the near future, the answer is . . . perhaps. I wouldn’t try another week-long quick peel, but I would definitely try a shorter variant where I wouldn’t use products once a week in the evening only. Otherwise, I think I’ll stick to my multi-step routine for now.
